This started with an idea about the conical hats as structures. As I added the bricks and the coloring, it kept getting darker and darker. The glowing tarantula arrived as I thought about what could come crawling out of such an environment. The glow happened when I set the Photo Object blend mode to screen and I liked the irradiated look. The lightning was manufactured from an invert difference cloud layer.
